Real Life Architectures

by Brandon Bohling

Ever wonder how Amazon, Digg, eBay, Flickr, Google (and many others) are building scalable solutions? High Scalability provides you the architecture insight you may have been after.

Directly from their website:

“We started High Scalability to help you build successful scalable websites. This site tries to bring together all the lore, art, science, practice, and experience of building scalable websites into one place so you can learn how to build your system with confidence. Hopefully this site will move you further and faster along the learning curve of success.”

I just discovered the website this morning, but what I have seen so far is certainly useful information. Their “Real Life Architectures” page has a list of MANY company architectures, ranging from Amazon to Google to YouTube. While you will not get any detailed diagrams, you will get a high level look at the technologies and approaches these companies have leveraged. Below is a screenshot from High Scalability, specifically describing Squarespace’s grid architecture.

Ever wonder how Squarespace handles hundreds of millions of requests a month?

In my opinion, you cannot wear the architect hat until you check out this site. I’m just saying.
